The gut - brain axis : Another part of the ADHD puzzle.
Did you know that there is this amazing thing we have going on in our body where what is happening in our gut affects our brain and vice versa? Meaning the states of health or disease in one can affect the other. This is comes down to something called the gut -brain axis.
What is the gut- brain axis?
The gut brain axis is a bi directional pathway between the Central Nervous System in the brain and the Enteric Nervous System in the gut. The main link between that is responsible for relaying messages is called the Vagus nerve.
Because of the gut- brain axis, when we have inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract, usually caused by external factors such as processed foods, alcohol, sugar and antibiotics it can result in mild neuroinflammation ( inflammation in the brain). Donβt panic because this can be rectified!
That neuroinflammation can lead to ADHD symptoms such as brain fog, poor memory, poor focus and concentration and anxiety, sleep disturbances and headaches all of which are incredibly common co-occurring conditions for people with ADHD.
So if yout have gut symptoms it may be time to give it some love. Overwhelmed with where to start? Reach out for a free natural adhd management chat to see how i can support you by clicking here. or contact a integrative gp or naturopath well versed in this area.
